Good show this morning. Playlist included past signature.Had a station trainee in to study my craft, and will yield part of my show to him next week so he can complete his paperwork.
At work, did tons of writing about Zez Confrey. The snow we got kind of slowed everything down - roads were terrible when I returned the car at lunchtime. We're already real worn out around here, and I'm the only one up still writing.
Here's the latest bee in my bonnet. On Friday night there was an academic feminist on one of the news stations airing her opinions about women in combat. Mind you, this is not a direct quote, but the gist of it was "it's a shame that we have to depend on men to fight our wars for us, but we need to repeal the 1994 law that permits women to serve in combat. (photo of injured soldier Jessica Lynch on stretcher, surrounded by medics) I don't want to see this again, I'm pretty sure women don't want to see it again, and I'm certain America doesn't want to see it again."
Now the following is my
opinion, okay? That's one thing I can't stand about feminist academics - they want full equality, but they don't want, as my wife put much more beautifully than I can when we discussed this, "to get anyone's hands dirty." The academic continued on - "we can't leave these women in combat situations where there is no way for them to survive." Actually, I think Jessica Lynch's triumph is that she just proved that a woman CAN survive in a combat situation. After all, she is the only survivor of her platoon, which also included eight men, who didn't make it.
What about the women who serve as firefighters and police officers? Guess what - sometimes, they get killed. It's part of the commitment they make when they decide to pursue a difficult and dangerous occupation. Being a soldier is about as dangerous as it gets, and I feel Jessica Lynch should be applauded for having the chutzpah to hang in there when the others around her, including her friend and the mother of two children, fell to the enemy. So perhaps this is not the time to say "alright! Enough is enough. No more women in combat." Rather I would say equality is equality, and sometimes it's ugly, but we should not change laws designed to right an inequitable balance between the sexes in certain professions. People make commitments, and have the right to decide for themselves what field of work they want to go into. We should especially not change things to satisfy the whims of an academic feminist who is repulsed by what she sees but has not thought it through - repeal that law, and the precedent it creates could be used to undo opportunites that have long existed for women in non-combat, public service oriented positions such as law enforcement and the like.
That's one thing I can't stand about this non-stop, wall to wall war coverage. They have plenty of airtime to fill, so they put on anyone whose got two sentences to stick together about anything.
End of opinion.
