Uncle Dave Lewis lives in a hole in the back of his brain, filled with useless trivia about 78 rpm records, silent movies, unfinished symphonies, broken up punk bands from the 80s and other old stuff no one cares about. This is where he goes to let off a little steam- perhaps you will find it useful, perhaps not. Who knows?

Why mp3.com is Evil now

In 2001 I signed up on an account for mp3.com, mainly just to get an mp3 player. But they had this neato feature where you can upload an audiofile and start a webpage of your music. So I did.

All of a sudden I started getting LOADS of unwanted email. I could barely stay ahead of deleting them. Somewhere along the line I deleted the email that contained the info about what my password was.

Then this computer died. It took nearly two years to get it fixed. By the time I was up and rolling again, mp3.com had been bought out by Vivendi/Universal.

I have ONE track on mp3.com. I have no way to add to what's there, and no way to take it down. I have no idea who thinks they own the rights to it - something that really bothers me. I wrote to them to try to get my password back, and this is what I got back-

Thank you for contacting MP3.com Artist Support.

We are currently not allowing any new Basic artists to
sign up. No emails will be answered sent to this
alias. To view the benefits of either Gold or
Platinum, please visit:

http://www.mp3.com/premium

If you have recently signed up and have an Approved
Artist Page, we still provide our "Artist Help"
section. This section includes our System Status
Report (SSR) and rolling Top 10 FAQ's which allow you
to view current updates and issues regarding the
MP3.com Artist Community. This area can be located
here:

http://help.mp3.com

The latter link leads to a vacant lot - a "404" page. If you've
forgotten your password and you need it resent to you, they
will (or may) do that - but the account I had when I signed up
with them is long gone. In other words, dear friends
I"M SCREWED

So here's where you'll find the track:

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/220/david_n_lewis.html

Enjoy it - savor it - it is the only song that will ever grace this webpage
on mp3.com. I hope someday they notice it's abandoned and take it down.
But I don't hope that someone decides to license it for a movie and Vivendi/
Universal just decides to pocket the money (wont be the first time that's
happened) OR they figure out where I am and send me the bill for keeping
it posted OR they sue me when I try to put it out myself.

Ain't that just a lovely ball of wax...

Uncle Dave Lewis (ex-mp3.com artiste)
