A Chip Off the Old Block
I was having a conversation with my nine-year-old daughter Remy, and she shared her observation that music is a little bit like money in that cetain notes have more value than others. I explained that some combinations of pitches are considered "weak" while others are "strong", and that a combination of both results in the most interesting music. I further stated that music made up mostly of "weak" tonal combinations results in bitter-sounding music, whereas music made up all of "strong" combinations tends towards a plainness of texture that seems featureless.
I also mentioned that music, to me, is more easily comparable to food, in there are so many different flavors and kinds of "nutrition". Remy agreed. We were listening to one of her favorite pieces, "Fur Elise" by Beethoven, and Remy said that if she were to compare it to food it would be like butterscotch pudding with a flower shaped dab of whipped cream. She went on to say that "rap music is more like eating pork rinds before going to bed."
That's my girl!
