Uncle Dave Lewis lives in a hole in the back of his brain, filled with useless trivia about 78 rpm records, silent movies, unfinished symphonies, broken up punk bands from the 80s and other old stuff no one cares about. This is where he goes to let off a little steam- perhaps you will find it useful, perhaps not. Who knows?

New Work Tonight (This Evening)

"Object to be Ignored" is the title. Here's the breakdown of what I did:

This is my first work involving the Cakewalk program I just got. I began it 3/17. I imported about 3.3/4 measures worth of a Germaine Tailleferre piece I like into Cakewalk and replicated it a gazillion times. Then I copied it to four additional stereo tracks, staggering the entrances of each and adding different effects to each. But I didn't do something right, and two of the tracks died - they wouldn't play. So I had a three track fragment of which the last two minutes or so was nothing more than the unadulterated repetition of the original. Not good.

I figured out how to bust it down to an mp3. (took forever). Then my wife decided to defrag my computer, which took two days. When I finally got to the mp3. I burned it to a disc. Then I made a wav. copy of that and re-edited the wav. in SoundForge, adding a long faded in introduction lasting 13 repetitions and modifying the latter part exactly as I had wanted to do in Cakewalk, repitching the tracks and then adding a very boomy delay for the end part. This I burned to cassette.

Then I rewired everything (big pain in the ass) and played the original CD and modified cassette into the computer together (another big pain in the ass). I had to wait out the long introduction of 13 repetitions and then drop in the CD just at the right time. It worked - there's a little blip there, but I never mind that - I love being able to get something into these mixed analog/digital pieces that makes you go "what the hell happened there?"

This will be submitted to the "Smelt Vol. 2" compilation that IOVAE is preparing in Cincinnati. He had used a couple of my older things for "Smelt Vol. 1" and asked for something new this time. Well, this is about as new as it can get, cause of this writing it's only about an hour old. Problem now is that I still have to go back with the book and learn how to use Cakewalk the right way.

E-mail me if you'd like to request an mp3. of the piece via email, it's 6.5MB.
