Jonathan D. Kramer (1941-2004)
Word has reached me that Jonathan Kramer died in New York on June 3rd of leukemia. Jonathan was a composer, teacher and writer who was best known for his erudite program notes for the New York Philharmonic, which he sometimes read on NYP broadcasts. Jonathan also taught at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was head of the electronic music department there, and I was one of his students. We were both members of the Cincinnati Composer's Guild.
I do have recollections of Jonathan which are close to my heart. Yet, I am both still weary from last night's experience in hell and sad enough over Jonathan's passing that I can't put them into words right now. Jonathan Kramer was a really decent guy. I have proposed that we dedicate the symposium part of the Cincinnati program to his memory.
And Then There's This One:
(former bandmate Lou Cheech writing from Cincinnati)
This is your old pal Lou. I don't know if anyone has informed you yet, so i'm taking this liberty to tell you in the event that you don't know. There's never an easy way to say this so here goes: On friday night, june 11th, our dear friend and fellow musician, John G. "Hammer" Sampson suffered a double infarction-type heart attack which is like having 2 heart attacks simultaneously. On sunday night, june 13th around 11:30 he was pronounced dead in the hospital. As a result of having not gone to the hospital sooner than later, he'd also suffered severe brain damage. His brother, Mike, called me today and told me officially what had happened and said that John's body just couldn't handle the misfortunate heart attack.
Hammer was a drummer in blues bands in Cincinnati. He was one of the few "straight" bar bandsmen in Cincinnati who didn't think my work was just a crock of sh*t and that I didn't know what I was doing. One late night at Murphy's Pub Hammer, my brother Chris, Crazy Pete from Bucking Strap and I did a fifteen minute jam on "You Look Like John F. Kennedy." We all had a terrific time - looking back that was one of the few times I felt like I "fit in" to the music scene there. Of course, since then there have been tons of bands like mine that have played Cincinnati. Maybe Hammer sensed it was coming and that's why he didn't resist it so much like others. In any event, I'm sorry to hear that he's gone.
That's what sucks about getting older, friends. one person after who has touched your life with their kindness go to their reward and leave you behind. Perhaps that's the much-touted 'meaning of life" - we are supposed to reward their kindness through passing it onto others along our way.
Oh, and by the way, reagan's dead
You noticed. So did I. The flags all around are at half mast, and it was all over TV last week.
I don't have anything to say about it, but these articles from the Voice seemed to ring true...
