Uncle Dave Lewis lives in a hole in the back of his brain, filled with useless trivia about 78 rpm records, silent movies, unfinished symphonies, broken up punk bands from the 80s and other old stuff no one cares about. This is where he goes to let off a little steam- perhaps you will find it useful, perhaps not. Who knows?

Sorry Bro!

Before anything - let me wish my brother Christopher a happy 42nd bithday! Sorry I didn't call - I spaced on the date. Birthday gift is in the mail, almost.

A Warning from Kate Bridgman

Kate is from Cincinnati and she sends me a lot of fun stuff. You may have seen this somewhere before, but
when I got it I hadn't and it knocked me for a loop:

I hate people who forward too many warnings as much
as anyone, but this
one is REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT!
Please do not delete until you have read it. Better
yet, send this
warning to everyone on your e-mail list!
If someone comes to your front door saying they are
conducting a survey
on deer ticks and asks you to take off your clothes
and dance around, DO
NOT DO IT! This is a SCAM! They only want to see
you naked.
I wish I had gotten this yesterday..... I feel so
stupid now.

Here is the Biblical commentary on this situation, found in Habakkuk 2:15-16

Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors,
Pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk,
So that he can gaze at their naked bodies.
You will be filled with shame instead of glory.
Now it is your turn!
Drink, and be exposed!

Alright - it's less funny, but the oldest texts, such as those found among the Dead Sea scrolls, give
the last line as "Drink, and stagger!" The King James Version (1611) doesn't come anywhere near the
reading above:

Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink,
that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also,
that thou mayest look on their nakedness!
Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also,
and let thy foreskin be uncovered:
the cup of the LORD's right hand shall be turned unto thee,
and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.

The Pesher Commentary on Habakkuk, found in Qum'ran cave 1, seems to be responding to a text which is closer to that of King James:

Peshru about the "Priest" who is more proud of his shame than of his glory. Because he is not circumcised with the circumcision of his heart and he goes on his way for the sake of his profit so that the telling of the fastings will cover them (1QpHab, page 7, lines 12-14)

Okay this ain't funny anymore.
