Uncle Dave Lewis lives in a hole in the back of his brain, filled with useless trivia about 78 rpm records, silent movies, unfinished symphonies, broken up punk bands from the 80s and other old stuff no one cares about. This is where he goes to let off a little steam- perhaps you will find it useful, perhaps not. Who knows?

Theme and Variations on Having Lost a Good Fight

Well, the election is over, and my guy didn't win. I will have to get used to it, but I get used to all disappointing things. I'm kind of thick-skinned that way. Actually, it's a relief not to have to watch the political ads anymore - this is the first political ad-free day I've had in months.

Many members of my family who are Bush supporters read this blog. I can't imagine their disgust reading my stumping for Kerry. Well, he won in my state, and Bush won in yours. And as my Dad said "As Ohio votes, so will the nation." Indeed, that's where Bush ultimately won.

Most of the folks I work with also voted for Kerry. At work it was an unusual day today in that "Go to Hell!" was the standard answer to the question "How 'ya doin?"

All I will say, and afterward I'll shut up, is that America just voted in favor of higher gas prices, higher healthcare and prescription costs, runaway deficit spending, handing over more of the country to corporate control and the continuation of the War in Iraq ad infinitum. In the second debate, Bush promised lower drug prices by December. Prescription drugs are a major expense for my family - my wife's a heart patient, and my daughter and I both take regular medications which are prescribed for us. That will be his first test, and we'll see how it pans out.

Great Remy Joke!

Q: What do you call a paper you look at?

A: Pay-per-view!

I'm hoping to learn soon how to post pictures on this blog so you can see what fine drawings Remy is making these days. She has two new drawings she did of Cathy the Cat that are just splendid. For the second one Remy trapped Cathy in her room for an hour just so she could get a good pose. I'm glad the cat didn't decide to puke on her bed (like she did mine Sunday.)

Thinking Nice Thoughts

On a day like this it is a good thing (shades of Martha!) to count your blessings for a little pick-me-up. I got some swell records from Nauck's which I won a year ago, but couldn't get until now, and won a couple of other nice things on eBay - a bunch of Cowboy Copas records and something by Arthur Collins. Unpacking I discovered a manuscript book of music dated 1981 - it is the oldest music notebook I have which is still in one piece. Some of the contents are obvious - there are many sketches, and even relatively complete scores, of familiar rock songs I wrote for my bands of that time. But there are other sketches so obscure that I will have to enter them into Cakewalk just to find out what they are. There is one persistent idea which runs over the course of several pages, only a few measures at a time with no heading whatsoever. What the heck is it?

AND - I found a second music notebook, from California and dated 1995-1998. There are many things in here that are sketches for pieces which I never realized got as far as they did. I will have to inventorize these books soon and get the lisitngs up on this blog. This notebook had a lot of blank back pages (I often skip the backs and then turn the notebook the other way when I get to the end) so now I'm filling them up very quickly with new stuff - an oratorio based on the Gospel of Thomas. I've set 5-6 of the 114 sayings already.

Did anyone catch Amy Carlson on Law and Order tonight? She was so terrific - *sigh* what a dreamboat. One negatory comment here: "Crossing Jordan" sucks. Jill Hennesy has all that talent and the network handed her a series that's nothing more than a turd on a fancy plate. Oh, make that two: I don't much care for George Staphanopolous either - he's an asshole.

Those who still haven't jumped on the Bush bandwagon may enjoy Kristina Wong's "Billionaires for Bush" demonstration. Pics may be found at www.kristinasherylwong.com

Humbled, but recovering,
