Uncle Dave Lewis lives in a hole in the back of his brain, filled with useless trivia about 78 rpm records, silent movies, unfinished symphonies, broken up punk bands from the 80s and other old stuff no one cares about. This is where he goes to let off a little steam- perhaps you will find it useful, perhaps not. Who knows?

Thought for Today

Berlioz' overture "Les Francs Juges" does not refer to a part of Brigitte Bardot's anatomy.

Awful joke from Remy:

Q: What do you call it when you combine chocolate, nuts and a cracker?

A: Nutcracker Suite! (i.e. "nutcracker sweet" – God in heaven what have I wrought?)

More Stuff from Remy

I recently got a Hawaiiam shirt that formwely belonged to my grandfather. It is white with blue ink and has all the names of the islands on it.

Remy said - "Daddy, if we go to Hawaii, be sure and wear that shirt so we don't get lost."

I was so taken aback that I didn't say anything right away. Then she repeated it. I said "Yeah, Punkin' I heard you right the first time."

I think that God inflicts children upon parents partly for the purpose of asking those questions of the kind that your parents were never able to answer. We were flying a kite today and she asked me "Daddy is there a kite heaven? You know, place where lost kites go, at least the ones that don't get sucked into the turbines of planes."

Uh - I didn't have an answer for that, so she asked again. I ended up saying "I guess so. I don't see any reason why there wouldn't be a kite heaven."

I had scanned some of Remy's drawings to post on this blog. But the computer that held the scans died yesterday. Yes, it's the "new" one - I'm writing this on my old one, which is just a shell but still works.

I'm working on the radio show for Thursday, which is coming in fits and starts. Friday we had a "tiki party" at work. I brought a turntable and brought a healthy armload of Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman albums. Everyone liked the music - Maeve even said "this is fun stuff." It's ironic to me that practically all of the writing we have on these artists is uncomplementary. There's something eternal about Hawaiian exotica that has a wide appeal which rock critics in particular are very suspicious of. I just see it as a kind of jazz that has a strong Polynesian/Asian flavor. When I was in high school nothing could be more uncool than to admit you listened to this stuff, let alone collect it, as I did. I'm glad I did so then, when it was still plentiful and cheap. Today prices on these albums are through the roof. Kaede set a up a nice display of all the album jackets - I commented that there was something like 3 or 400 dollars in album set up there. I probably spent no more than $10 on all of them.

I recently won thru eBay a replacement copy of a 78 I first acquired when I was nine or so, "Old Black Joe" by the Fisk University Jubilee Quartet. This was the first Gospel 78 I ever owned. I put it away for safekeeping, and still have the old one, which is now a broken ruin of a record. This new one I got is in perfect shape, as clean and shiny as one can imagine a 1909 record to look. I'm pleased as punch!
