Uncle Dave Lewis lives in a hole in the back of his brain, filled with useless trivia about 78 rpm records, silent movies, unfinished symphonies, broken up punk bands from the 80s and other old stuff no one cares about. This is where he goes to let off a little steam- perhaps you will find it useful, perhaps not. Who knows?

QuagMiers

I have recently learned that by not supporting President Bush's choice of Harriet Miers to fill
the vacant seat on the Supreme Court that I am siding with conservative Republicans. *That's nice.* :0~~~
Not only that, but my criticism of her for having no prior judicial experience was unjust. There have been plenty of fellows that served on the highest court of the land with no judgeships on their blotter; one of them was my commie pinko liberal hero Earl Warren (he had been Governer of Minnesota, but not a judge.)
But doesn't anyone see a conflict of interest in the President naming his own personal attorney to the bench? Again, am I dreaming...

Al Gore said this in a speech the other day -

"How many of you, I wonder, have heard a friend or a family member in the last few years remark that it's almost as if America has entered "an alternate universe"?

I thought maybe it was an aberration when three-quarters of Americans said they believed that Saddam Hussein was responsible for attacking us on September 11, 2001. But more than four years later, between a third and a half still believe Saddam was personally responsible for planning and supporting the attack.

At first I thought the exhaustive, non-stop coverage of the O.J. trial was just an unfortunate excess that marked an unwelcome departure from the normal good sense and judgment of our television news media. But now we know that it was merely an early example of a new pattern of serial obsessions that periodically take over the airwaves for weeks at a time.

Are we still routinely torturing helpless prisoners, and if so, does it feel right that we as American citizens are not outraged by the practice? And does it feel right to have no ongoing discussion of whether or not this abhorrent, medieval behavior is being carried out in the name of the American people? If the gap between rich and poor is widening steadily and economic stress is mounting for low-income families, why do we seem increasingly apathetic and lethargic in our role as citizens?"

Gore's whole speech is at:

It won't set you on fire. It's long and parts of it are statistical and dull. But it's a very relevant piece of oratory.

By the way, in my junior high school American History textbook there was a picture of Earl Warren. Think it's still there now?
